Would you like to try being alcohol-free for 2019?
Allianz Care have teamed up with OneYearNoBeer (OYNB) to help you go alcohol-free. OYNB’s mission is to support people changing their relationship with alcohol completely, by helping them gain control of their drinking habits.
With over 25,000 members in 90 countries, OYNB have created a powerful habit-change model based on their unique “MEND system” - Mind, Exercise, Nutrition and Do. This system helps members to change their relationship with alcohol by taking a 28, 90 or 365-day alcohol-free challenge.
Kevin Billington, Senior Client Relationship Manager at Allianz Partners International Health has taken the OYNB challenge. We asked Kevin to share his experience.
It was early January and I was considering New Year resolutions when I stumbled across the OYNB challenge online. The benefits of going alcohol-free resonated with me, so I signed up for the introductory offer. I began with the 28 days challenge, on completion I knew that I would continue for the full year as I was already noticing the benefits.
As a moderate drinker who mainly enjoyed wine at the weekends, I didn’t think participating in the challenge would have significant impact on my life. I was wrong. Initially, I thought my social life would suffer, but the reality was I continued to socialise, only now I could leave when I wanted and didn’t have to worry about how I would get home, as I could drive myself and others.
Embarking on the challenge also helped with my general fitness levels. Being alcohol-free meant my mood was more stable, I felt less stressed and I had no hangovers. All of which meant that I felt more able and motivated to exercise. The challenge has also impacted others around me as they have seen the positive impact it has had on me, and they too have decided to go alcohol-free.
Honestly, no. There are situations where I am tempted to have a drink, for example a glass of red wine if I’m having a steak. When temptation does arise I ask myself “would a drink really make this better?” . If the answer is yes then I will have a drink. However, I haven’t been in a situation yet where alcohol would add to my enjoyment so I remain alcohol-free. There is always a choice and if I want to have a drink, I will.
Anyone who wants to change their relationship with alcohol. The challenge isn’t really about abstinence, it’s about transformation. By becoming more mindful about alcohol consumption you can make considered choices which will transform your physical and mental health, personal relationships, professional goals and many other aspects of your life.
When beginning the OYNB challenge participants are encouraged to think about the reasons why they are entering into the challenge. I would encourage participants to spend some time considering their own reasons. I still refer to mine if I need to refocus and find them to be a powerful motivator.
