HIV is a virus that weakens a person’s immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection. HIV can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) if not treated. Unlike some other viruses, the human body can’t get rid of HIV completely, even with treatment. So once someone is infected with HIV, they have it for life. No effective cure exists for HIV and for this reason prevention is key. However with proper medical care, HIV can be controlled.
This month we will discuss the HIV virus: its signs and symptoms, how it can be transmitted, different methods of prevention, risk factors, ways of keeping yourself protected, how it is diagnosed, different types of treatment available and how to cope with a positive diagnosis.
