Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterised by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication. It is a condition affecting how you think, feel, interact with others, and experience the world. Put simply, autistic people see, hear and feel the world differently to other people.
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as it is often referred to, may be mild, moderate or severe. Everyday situations that may usually be viewed as comfortable can feel overwhelming for someone with autism. However, this can also mean that some people with autism find tasks that others find difficult, incredibly easy.
