If you suspect that a family member may have autism, consult your doctor.
There are no laboratory tests to determine autism. Your doctor will look at the child or adult’s development and social behaviour to make an assessment. Doctors often refer patients to a specialist for screening and evaluation, such as a paediatrician, psychiatrist, psychologist, neurologist or speech-language pathologist.
To be diagnosed with autism, a person must experience problems with communication and social interaction and restricted, repetitive and sensory behaviour or interests.
