Squamous cell carcinomas: Most (about 80 to 90 per cent) of cervical cancers are squamous cell carcinomas. Squamous cells are thin, flat, skin-like cells that line the surface of the cervix.
Adenocarcinomas: 10 to 20 per cent of cervical cancers are adenocarcinomas. Adenocarcinomas are cancers that develop from glandular cells.
